Death science: What happens to your body after you die?

You may want to know what happens after death, but have you ever sat down and thought about it? In a more physical sense, rather than in a spiritual sense. Even if we want it to be a mystery, it is not what happens to our bodies after death. Find out what happens to our bodies after death:

 Pale corpse

The body becomes pale 15 to 20 minutes after death. This condition is called a corpse. This medical condition is caused by the stop of blood flow through the capillaries (the smallest blood vessels in the body). The process is the same for everyone, but for people with darker skin, it is less obvious.

 Dead body

A temperature drop of 0.8 °C per hour corresponds to a dead body, also known as "death cold". Despite the cold, the body still has life.

 Autolysis

The decomposition mechanism is called autolysis, also known as "self-digestion": enzymes begin to break down hypoxic cell membranes. The ruptured blood vessels burst, releasing damaged blood cells. Capillaries, small blood vessels, and other areas of the skin change color when they invade the capillaries. Blue and red spots (including purple hues) appear a few hours after death, but are not always noticeable until a few hours later.

 Zombie

When the level of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) drops, it occurs about a few hours after death, causing the body to harden. The eyelids and neck muscles are the first to show signs of stiffness.

 The bowel has been emptied

Because of the stiffness of the corpse, our body may become hard, but this is not always the case. We actually lose control in some parts, such as our sphincter, because it is basically controlled by our brain in life. Due to the loss of brain regulation, the sphincter has more freedom to open and release any accumulated waste.

 Bacterial digestion

There are bacteria in humans. When the body is alive, they are mainly present in the intestines, and the immune system usually prevents them from reaching other internal organs. However, the bacteria can freely feed on the whole body after death. The intestines and nearby tissues are digested first. To feast, they then enter the capillaries and enter the heart and brain. According to research conducted by Gulnaz Javan and his team, scientists found that bacteria can spread to the liver, heart, spleen and brain after 58 hours.

 Corruption

After the initial decomposition stage, it may take several days for corruption to fully manifest. By releasing gas, bacteria and larvae in the body will break down carbohydrates, proteins, and other compounds in the body. These compounds will swell and eventually destroy the skin, thereby attracting other insects. The body slowly decomposes. There may be many factors that determine the time it takes for a corpse to decompose, including the cause of death, the environment, and even the clothes on the corpse.

 Enduring bones

The bone mineral hydroxyapatite becomes dust after being broken down by bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms for more than ten years.
